Buoy status report

The following report on the status of GoMOOS buoys is compiled by Linda Mangum at the University of Maine.



U.Maine PhOG GoMOOS Status Report Update  18 October 2007

Budgetary shortfalls have forced the operations into austerity mode. 
Under this mode of operation, problems with buoy performance are not 
necessarily corrected at earliest opportunity because of ship charter 
expenses. Instead we rely on local small vessels and good weather to 
attempt repairs on nearshore buoys. Offshore buoys will be repaired if 
ships of opportunity become available or if the buoy becomes a hazard 
to navigation.


MOORING PROGRAM 

Recent Updates:
     Fall Turnaround:  The first part of the fall turnaround was completed
          during 17-24 Sep 2007.  Buoys A01, B01, E01, F01, I01, L01, M01 
          and N01 were recovered and redeployed with new buoys and 
          instrumentation.  All buoys are measuring surface met observations 
          every 10 minutes; surface wave and 1m temperature and salinity 
          are measured every 30 minutes.  Currents and subsurface temperature 
          and salinity are reported hourly.  Processed optics data from B01, 
          E01, F01, I01, and M01 are not available in real-time.  Optics data 
          from A01 are avaiable in real-time.

             Visibility sensor replaced 7 Jul 2007.  All data okay.

	     Winds failed 28 Dec 2006.
             35m salinity sensor failed on 20 Apr 2007.
             Wind sensor replaced 31 Jan 2007 (mast/sensor damaged).
	     Winds failed again on 28 Jul 2007 (mast/sensor damaged).
             Replaced wind sensor on 21 Aug 2007 but winds are still invalid.
	     Last data received from 20m optode 5 Sep 2007.
     E0121   Deployed 18 Sep 2007.
	     All data okay.
     F0116   Deployed 22 Sep 2007.  
	     All data okay except for tower optics (PAR) sensor.
     I0118   Deployed 18 Sep 2007. 
             All data okay.
     J0214   Deployed 29 Nov 2006.
             Wind sensors replaced 28 Feb 2007.
             Last data received from 2m surface current meter on 28 Apr 2007.
	     Barometric pressure sensor flagged as invalid on 1 Jul 2007 
	     (appears to have drifted high by 2 mb).
     L0113   Deployed 21 Sep 2007.
             Temperature and salinity data from 20m and 50m SBEIMs show 
	     occasional corrupt data; otherwise all data okay.
     M0112   Deployed 21 Sep 2007. 
	     All data okay.
     N0106   Deployed 19 Sep 2007.  
	     All data okay.

Notes:  
   
  SBE37 sensors continue to be set to internally record temperature and 
      conductivity data every 3 minutes.  We are only getting back hourly 
      data in realtime but the high resolution data from these sensors will 
      be available after the moorings are recovered and the data are 
      downloaded from the instruments.

  All buoys (except D01) are deployed with dual wind sensors.  The primary wind
      sensors are Gill sonic anemometers and the backup wind sensors are 
      RM Young sensors.

   Cruise Schedule:  There will be one or more cruises sometime in late 
      October or early Novemeber to service buoys C02, D01, and J02.

CODAR PROGRAM

Green's Island:

Current Status: Equipment being repaired.

Recent Visits:
     A visit was made on 12 Sep 2007 to investigate damage caused by a storm
     in Aug 2007.  The transmitter and wireless internet antenna were found to
     be damaged; the transmitter and receiver have been sent back to CODAROS 
     for repair.  As soon as the repaired equipment are received, they will be
     reinstalled on Green's Island.

Cape St. Marys, NS   Canada

Current Status:  Operating normally.
  
Recent Visits:
     A site visit will need to be made in the next few months to upgrate the
     firmware so that the site can operate in multi-static mode.

Wood Island:

Current Status: Operating normally.

Updates:
     A site visit was made in July 2007 to reinforce and add concrete to the 
     antenna bases (they had been damaged in the storms earlier this spring).

Grand Manan:
     With the cooperation and support offered by several units of the Canadian 
     Coast Guard, the installation of the site at the Canadian Coast Guard site 
     on Grand Manaan was completed between 6-10 August 2007.  The assistance of 
     the unit of Towers and Antennas Systems was invaluable in doing the actual 
     installation.  The Search and Rescue Unit contributed fencing material to 
     comply with the license requirement to erect a fence around the antennas 
     and the Towers and Antennas Systems Unit coordinated the actual installation 
     of the fence.  The site was operational on 10 Aug 20067 but problems existed 
     in setting up communications to transfer the data from the site back to 
     U.Maine.  A second visit was made on 17-18 Sep 2007 to install and set up the 
     wireless internet.  Data are now being receieved at U.Maine and are presently 
     under evaluation to diagnose possible hardware issues.  An antenna pattern 
     will need to be done at some later date.

National Coordination:
     Radial files from the GoMOOS Codar sites are now being transferred 
     to the Scripps/UCSD San Diego Coastal Ocean Observing System (SDCOOS) 
     prototype project.  A server has been received and is being configured to
     act as a northeast network portal.
